Alabama Primary Health Care Association

The residents of Alabama have another agency whose purpose is to assure health care to the state's special population. The Alabama Primary Health Care Association (APHCA) is a non-profit health care organization composed of 19 local health centers which have 76 delivery sites throughout the state. These health care centers are dedicated to making quality health care available to every citizen of Alabama regardless of race, religion, creed, ethnic background and/or their ability to pay.

APHCA is an organization governed by a 22-member Board of Directors. APHCA was incorporated in 1985 as a non-profit representative organization of federally-funded Community Health Centers (CHCs) to create and strengthen a community-based primary health care delivery system covering the entire state. Organizations associated with APHCA include a Black Lung Respirator Program, Health Care for the Homeless Coalition, two Sickle Cell Organizations, Tuskegee Area Health Education Center (TAHEC), and Rural Alabama Health Alliance (RAHA).

The Association is acutely aware of the medically underserved residents of Alabama who lack access to quality primary health care services. The barriers to access are financial, geographical and cultural. Therefore, the mission and purpose of APHCA is to promote access to health care and the delivery of comprehensive primary health care services for all Alabamians through its programs, activities, and membership.

APHCA works to bring together necessary resources to build and sustain a delivery system for those in need. This is accomplished through a broad range of goals that incorporate the provision of technical assistance to Health Centers and community-based providers of primary care for the medically underserved.

As community owned and operated public/private partnerships, health centers have achieved unparalleled success, not only in improving health and preventing disease, but containing health care costs for the populations served.
