Health Services Inc. was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1968 to provide primary health care services to indegent persons in Moktgomery County. Since then, Health Services Inc. now operates ten primary care centeres in six counties including Lister Hill Health Care Center, Ramer Family Health Center, Montgomery Primary Health Care Center, Chisholm Family Health Care Center, Family Health Care Center Hayneville County and Gunter Air Force Base as a satellite for Women, Infants & Children (WIC)

The mission of HSI is to improve quality primary health care for uninsured and underinsured persons in a respectable setting.

The Lister Hill Health Center was officially named in 1973 in honor of the late Senator Lister Hill who was instrumental in obtaining legislation for the construction of medical facilities throughout the nation.

In 1994 HSI assumed the total operation and responsibility for Montgomery Primary Health Care Center, which was then located on the Southern Bypass. In July 1995, the center was moved to the new facility on Mobile Highway.

Today, HSI Board of Directors structured with a majority of useres meets congressional authorization as a Community Health Center under section 330 of the Public Health Services, and is certified as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC).

HSI receives a federal grant; other revenues are generated by patient fees and third party reimbursements (Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance). Funding support is also received from the City, County and State.

Patient fees for services are based on Federal Poverty Income Guidelines and are discounted through a sliding fee scale.

During 2003, HSI served more than 30,000 active patients who generated more than 100,000 patient visits. Our Women's Pavilllion averages more than 60 deliveries each moth.

The medical and dental staff services consist of OB/GYN, Family Practice, General Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Specialty Consultants, Dentistry, and Podiatry.

Support and ancillary services include: Laboratory, X-ray, Pharmacy, Social Services, WIC and Transportation.

HSI Pharmacy fills an average of 700 perscriptions ped day.

Comprehensive services are designed to address primary care needs according to the human life cycle and special population: Perinatal, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric, and other special populations, i.e. Substance Abusers, AIDS and the Homeless.

HSI is the main provider of primary care services to the medically underserved residents of Montgomery and surrounding counties.

HSI is committed to working with the public and private sectors in order to ensure comprehensive primary care services are readily available and accessible to area residents.

HSI provides clinical rotations for RN students from Troy State, AUM and Tuskegee Universities as well as LPN, Medical and Dental Assistant student rotations from Trenholm State Technical College, and Nurse Practitioner students from UAB and Troy State.

HSI provides Clinical training to Baptist Family Medicine Residents and to the Podiatry Residents at the regional Veteran's Hospital.

HSI maintainstains organizational membership in the Alabama Primary Health Care Association (APHCA), the Alabama Community Health Care Network, and the National Association of Community Health Care Centers (NACHC).

HSI is also a United Way Agency providing educational and prenatal services and direct payments for related patient referral services and Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance coverage for needy children. United Way also provices funding for patient referrals.

As a certified Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), HSI receives cost-based reimbursement under both Medicare and Medicaid Authorization.

HSI operational budget exceeds $9.5 million and employs over 250 persons. The city of Montgomery provides nearly a million dollars in funding for MPHCC, while the County Commission provides MPHCC a rent-free facility.

HSI is accountable to the community and receives multiple annual audits: U.S. Public Health Service, Independent Financial Audit, Medicaid Audit, Medicare Audit, audits from two State Health Department agencies, United Way and other programmable audits.

HSI is accreditied by the Joint Commission of Accreditation for Healthcare Organiztions (JCAHO) and the Laboratory is accredited by COLA.
